I don’t like to plan ahead. It takes the magic away. So, I just flew to Athens, since Greece was calling me for a while now. Athens is a wonderful city. Climbing up this random hill called Acropolis in the midst of the city, all you can see is a sea full of white painted houses, one side of the city facing the Mediterranean Sea, the other side mountains. In Athens, despite hundreds of historical sites, you’ll find a young, dynamic, artistic vibe which I liked a lot and reminded me a bit of Berlin. Second morning there, I went to one of the best yoga classes in my life. The studio was also the teachers home, with colorful walls, a cat and a dog and the kitchen right next to our mats. George is a fantastic teacher, I am very touched by his being. He didn’t let me pay a penny for my first class, which I realised afterwards, was a little gift from the universe I received since I give yoga classes for free as well.
Athens was dope, but after two days I was happy to make a day trip with two amazing fellow travellers to Delphi. We rented a car (which isn’t that expensive) and drove through a beautiful landscape up north into the mountains. Delphi, in old times the navel of the world and for sure a spiritual center, is located in a wide open valley on a hill overlooking fields of olive trees and water (so Greek). We arrived with two buses full of German tourists. Spiritual vibes gone from the beginning, tho we still meditated next to the biggest temple. After Delphi we drove up the mountain as far as we could and hiked up the rest to a massive cave. While my companions went climbing inside the cave into the darkness, I introduced myself to all the spirits there. I started chanting and the 15m ceiling made my voice omnipresent. I hope this cave carried my prayers out into the world. Overall, worth a visit!! Sean, the crazy LA guy, drove us back as if we were in a hurry, tho it was only me who had to catch a flight!!
Yeah, I was already saying goodbye to Greece! Those three days were amazing. But the upcoming rain and the cold weather made me change country asap. My original plan of island hopping and beach days wasn’t realistic in October. Gonna explore Greece another time! Next stop: Italy. Visiting a friend in a five star resort was quite a change to hostel life. I had a blast!! First time that I was able to relax and really felt like shaking off all the stress and discomfort from the last couple of month. Being in this high-class environment dressed as an authentic hippie is fun and also a nice psychological experience of not rejecting luxury even tho I have no longing for it. Visiting Venice and other small Italian cities, eating fine, enjoying sunshine and good company, led me dive into new worlds. Very grateful for this experience.
Italy was just a quicky tho. I knew, I didn’t wanna spent my last two weeks of holidays there, since I already knew the country quite a bit. So, on another plane, to another country: Spain. More explicit to Tenerife, my dream Canary Island for ages!!
Aww, how thankful I am to have been able to visit this beauty! Tenerife is one of the bigger islands of the Canaries. The landscape is something else, believe me. You can imagine the island to be like that: there’s the Vulcano, called Teide with an altitude of 3.715 m in the middle, around it mountains with an incredible flora and fauna and then like a wreath you have a flat desert like area around the island going into the Atlantic. I spent my first few days in the south, first in Médano, a kite surfing town with a chilled surfer vibe, and then in one of the coolest, really chilled hostels ever, LOS AMIGOS, close to the south airport of the island. There I met two wonderful souls from Berlin with whom I connected during a full moon ceremony on the beach. It was insanely magical. We had a guided meditation and breathwork session after doing some yoga during sunset, we drunk cacao and connected with the full moon rising behind us. I love feminine energy uniting, it’s so sacred, healing and fulfilling. Very very thankful for this moment.
The first days on the island I spent enjoying being sunkissed. The two girls, Leo, our male balance (and my only vegan buddy) and me rented an Airbnb on the West coast, a finca in the middle of nowhere. Also it definitely makes sense to rent a car (not as easy and cheap tho), cause the bus system is not convenient at all. From there we made day trips to the beach, the National Park up in the mountains and the north coast of the island. Hiking in the National park is a must! Hiking up to Teide’s Top is next level and requires experience. The photos Leo took where insane tho. A reason for me to return with hiking boots for sure! Everyone keeps saying it feels like being on Mars there and yupp… it really does!
Also go to Playa DIEGO HERNANDEZ, the so called hippie beach, which is incredibly dope and a hidden gem! You can skip Adeje, it’s just a touristic all inclusive holiday town. The north coast is completely different from the rest of the island, way more green and a bit colder, with steeper mountains stretching down into the ocean. There we visited Puerto Cruz and a small lovely permaculture community called Serene Light Gardens, where we had lunch. Recommended!
We soon had to say goodbye to Caro and the three of us moved to a hostel in La Laguna, the old town of Santa Cruz. I continued with la Orotava the next day. All beautiful historical colonial towns. They reminded us of towns in Central America and sweet old memories came back. I had the chance to drive with two guys from my hostel into the mountains, through the National park again, this time Teide in full sight. No words for this world up there!! A photo will do more justice.
My last days I spent in the south again, enjoying the sun to the fullest before stepping back into the matrix.
So thankful for this healing, deeply relaxing journey I had and all the people I met. Gracias Wakan Tanka, Gaia, my guiding spirits.
with love,
WITTA.
